Sulawesi water

tpalopoli Jun 14, 2007 08:33 AM

I am raising a Malayan and Sulawesi water roughly the same age (~6 mos). I am amazed at the growth rate difference. I know the Sulawesi is marketed as a smaller locality water, but it is interesting to actually see this. Does anyone have any experience with adult Sulawesi waters? I think their markings and scalation are amazing, almost mesmerizing when he is wet and cleaned up. I just have never been able to find a pic of an adult or anyone that has bred this interesting animal. If they really stay at the 4-5’ range it would appear a really interesting breeding project.

Oh and the Malayan’s growth rate is…friggen scary. Again, you can read it and see the pics and be told all day long but actually watching it is a whole new ball game. In fact it seems you can ALMOST actually watch it hahah. He also seems more intelligent than other monitors I have been around, almost eerie when he looks at me hahahha ("hi stupid, got a mouse?". He has a cool confidence about him. It is such a shame these magnificent creatures are imported by the bazillion and sold so cheaply…they are worth so much more than that sad fate.

So anyone breeding Sulawesi’s or have a pic of an adult? Thanks -

Tom

First off, you cannot tell anything from a few individuals. Different individuals from any single clutch grow at different rates, Always. So going by one individual of one type and comparing it to one individual of another type, then saying its about species, is not very accurate. That is a bad example and leads to prejudiced information.

In my experience, all monitors grow very fast, including the small ones. They all grow in the area of 3 or 6 inches a month. Only the larger species keep on growing.

I would think that those two types should grow the same rate, with the malay individual continuing to grow after the other stopped.

My experience with the smaller waters came with V.cumingi. I raised a few from hatchlings and my male grew to 6 feet in his first year here. The female grew to nearly five.

While I am sure, they would not have grown to 8 or 9 feet, they were still much larger then the 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 feet they were suppose to reach.

While this seems fast, our local lizards grow much faster. Every year and this year is no different, a few lizards will pick areas that I work around(so I get to see them on a hourly basis) They normally do this when they are neonates. They normally grow to adult size in a few weeks(4-6)

To compare that to monitors, they take normally 4-6 months to reach adulthood(sexual maturity) with the large species taking about a year. Cheers

This is an insult to everyone on this board, not that your language isn’t beautiful but its out of place here!

I don’t understand what you said, therefore I can take this as insulting.
Imagine if I was to post in French every time I am upset, heck they would ban me pronto!

varanio09 Jun 14, 2007 03:59 PM

There were no insults in his post Jobi... he actually acknowledge FR.

Steve,
Not sure if you use this tool or not, but I find it useful from time to time.

Yes I know about this translator, in fact I got it sins I got this copy of a German varanids book, I started translating the first page then realised its impossible to understand the context, words simply have different meanings in different languages, so I will wait for an English edition to come out, until then this book has no use to me.
That same applies to posts in Spanish, I cant understand them, even if they are good, comprendez!

a friend of mine raised a sulawesi speckled water monitor to adulthood. it grew to 6 feet. i had a photo of it on my website but the gallery is down now. i could scan it for you if you want to see it. unfortunately, is is not alive anymore, died of cancer or so i was told. i do not know of anyone else who has raised that type to adulthood- most folks give up early on. as for the salvators ive raised, they all grew scary fast, maybe not as fast as FRs, but up to 5 feet in a year for my male sulfurs, 3-4 for my females. regards,

John
