Madagascar Gecko Skin

beuz Sep 05, 2003 04:41 PM

Hello

I have a problem with my three months baby madagascar giant day gecko. She does't get rid of her old skin. She is sheding but the skin doesn't come off. First shedding....second shedding..she looks like a mummy!
I already posted a message on this forum about this..(at the first sheding)I had answers, to spray some water directly on her..;thing I did. I also bought a humidifier to get a constant humidity. Unfortunatelly...still the same problem....

If some people have any ideas....

Thank you

Beuz

Hello! is the skin still on your gecko? the most important thing first off is to try and remove it. you'll have to be very carefull as their skin is delicate. if you get someone to help, one of you could hold to gecko, while the other carefully bathes it with a damp cotton bud to try and loosen the skin.

does the tank have a mesh lid? if it does, you could try covering part of that so the moist air doesn't escape quite so easily. you could also add some live plants to the tank.

other then that, mist the tank night and morning. just spray the plants, walls and substrate. i wouldn't advise spraying the gecko as it could make them ill.

hope this helps!

Someone gave me this tip once and it seems to work well, although I've never had a problem QUITE this severe.
Buy a styrofoam cooler at Walmart, then soak down a bath towel and put it in the bottom. Put the gecko in the cooler for a few hours (the cheap coolers don't seem to be airtight). Usually whatever is stuck will either come off or be a lot closer to coming off.

Wow, you are in the same position i was in before. My baby giant day gecko had about 3 layers of unshed skin on her tail. Though i just put her in a containor full of warm water for a half an hour. About 65% of it came off, but as she grew, they ripped off on its own. Good luck.

Thank you for all your answers.
I divided my container in two parts. One with the regular litter and the other one with a wet (soaking) towel. I also closed the container so the humidity stays. It seems it shows already results. At least, her head doesn't have any skin left anymore.

Thank you again
