Need help with new Savannah

KenMc Apr 11, 2006 08:51 PM

I got a Savannah over the weekend and its awesome! I have some questions regarding eating. He is one month old and I am putting canned monitor food along with crickets and mealworms which are the zoo med canned insects. So far he hasn't eaten yet. I am feeding fresh food everyday since Sunday. Is this normal? I understand it may take a few days for him to get used to the setup. I have him in a 55 gallon tank. I am using a mixture of potting soil and sand. The temp is 85F at night and during the day the cool side is 85F, hot side is 115F. He looks fine, he's very active and alert, but he doesn't eat. I handled him yesterday and he seemed content with me. He didn't hiss and he was running up and down my arm. Is my setup ok? Oh yeah the humidity is around 50% and I have a hide box and brach for him as well. Thanks for the info. Here's a pic of my GTP, will post pics of the savannah in a few days.

I am not the one to say anything on your setup. I have only been at this for a year now. For the food though I do have some advice. First off how big is he 7" total nose to tip of tail? Well with my little ones they will only eat live crickets that jump around and give them a chase. My "little guy" will eat dusted crickets while the "girl" will not eat them if they are dusted. He will eat smaller crickets whilke hers have to be an inch and fat. She will eat ground beef and turkey coated with calcium and vitamins while he wants nothing to do with the stuff. Neither of them will even touch a pinky(day old). So in the end you have to try different things to find out what he will eat. Stay with whole live foods though if you want a healthy monitor that grows properly. They do get big. Here is a picture of my little ones in my hand.

Live crickets.

Yup, live crickets. They really need to be dusted for more complete nutrition. Feed them often -as much as they will eat.

Any warm-blooded feeder animals should be pre-killed.

Visit the PROEXOTICS website for setup and caresheet information. Their info is the best IMHO.

First of all, I recommend ditching the canned food completely unless your sav is underweight.

Second, be careful how much you feed him. While he's growing it's more or less ok to feed him all he can eat, but definitely be careful with this as he reaches adult size. He'll keep eating and eating, and may become overweight.

As a few others have already told you, live crickets, dusted with supplement.
