Kicksome123 Sep 19, 2006 06:16 PM

Hi, just got back from the pet store and set up the cage. The pet store had 2 kinds savannah and nile. I went ahead and said no to the nile because of the enclosure price I read about once. This is the first time I have ever seen a monitor in person. So just tell me what yall think. This guy is eating like a champ...

Seems like a nice Savannah monitor. I think your first priority is to fatten it up! [laugh]

how many crix should I feed it a day?

I usually feed it as much as it will eat everyother day. Make sure you give it appropreate size rodents; it's important for growing babies. Rodents are more nutritional well rounded than iverts and are higher in calories, which is important for growing animals. You can also feed it in smaller portion everyday if you like, but I find it's easier just to do it everyother day. As they get older, they may ignore the crickets and inverts completely, like what mine is doing right now. When he is fully grown, I would cut back on the food so he doesn't get obeise. I say when he is fully grown you would only need to feed him rodents once or twice a week of an appropreate portion of food. If he gets fat, cut back on the food and take him out for exercise more often, but you don't have to worry about that now because your is still growing.

Give him a nice hot basking spot and plenty of food. Prepare to spend lots of money on food for that boy and be ready to build him a nice huge cage. And also be prepared to become addicted to monitors once you see how incredible they are! Hope you are ready. Congrats

You should probably give him some space at least for a week or so before you handle him. Also be weary of the bite and make sure he doesn't get into a habit of it. Right now it might not hurt but once hes a foot and a half or so I know from experience that they can take a good little chunk out of a knuckle.
