Savannah Habitat

DocThaStar Mar 07, 2007 11:39 PM

I was just wondering if someone could give me some tips. I was wondering how long a habitat that is Size.. 72Long x 30Wide x 18High would last me. Also if you could give me some tips as to the supplies I will need to set up this habitat to the best standards and money is not an option. I want to own the happiest, healthiest monitor around. :-D I love the little guy, Deuce, he is my new best friend. Thank you for your time.

PS: I will be adding a couple pics tomorrow.

saw your post above and i would say that you need to change the substrate!!!! indoor outdoor carpet is bad. when i kept monitors i used cypress mulch. when i get back into them i will probably use a dirt/sand mix or something similar. deep enough that they can dig around and make burrows.

also, saw your post below and see that one you have part of the cage in sand, i would do the whole cage in a sand/soil. as far as feeding, savs should eat anything.i had a sav for a few months that i was watching for a friend and it ate earthworms, crayfish, mealworms, crickets, thawed out rodents. it grew about 24 inches in 2.5 months or so. i would check your temps. i said in a post below that basking spot for a sav should be 120. i was corrected and basking spot should be 130 or a little more. warm side of tank in low 90s and cool side low 80s. night time temps can be 75.......so maybe your temps arent up to par?

Yeah, figured it out before you posted but thank you very much for helping. It was the temps and he is back to eating two or three fuzzies every other day. he was about 8 inches when i got him and is about 13 or 14 now after about a month. Got my first bite a few days ago and flinched and got a little blood drawn. Not too bad until about 5 minutes later when the burning began. Whenever I hold him he constantly squirms and tries to run away no matter how long I hold him so I have been letting him rest on my hand in the tub. Not much change so far but hopefully this will help. I am going to buy The Savannah Book by Daniel Bennett I belive is the author, out of my next check. I have heard good things about it and am hoping for much insite. Any advise on the best habitat to buy for him in a two bedroom apartment, 2nd floor, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, Crayfish, whole or just the tail peeled?

i just fed live crayfish whole. i took the pinchers off if they were real big though.

as for habitat for an adult it an apt.... i dont know really. you will have to construct something in one of the rooms... maybe like a 6foot long by 3feet tall and 3-4 fet wide would be good....then do what you got now, dirt for burrowing, multiple basking spots, water bowl.....

Ok how about a cage that is made from plastic, 6 feet long by 2 and a half feet deep and 1 and a half feet tall but it is enclosed all around except for two swinging doors on the front
