Snake eater?

kodiac Mar 13, 2007 12:04 AM

I want to feed my sav a snake and I've read and figured that they eat snakes. I read that they can eat venomous snakes, but I'm wandering if that's only snakes that are in thier natural habitat or not. I live in texas so I could easily find a rattler, but I don't want to kill the lizard, I just wanna catch a snake( between 18-24" ) and watch the fight. Plus I've read it's good to change between foods every now and then. Anyone know what kinds of venomous snakes they're immune to or if it is even ok to feed them just a garter snake or something?

Also, does anyone know at what size they stop climbing? I saw a post from last year that said the woman had two and they stopped climbing so she had to redo thier cage. I'm currently brainstorming on a new enclosure and want to make sure he will use it if it's tall, otherwise, I won't bother making it tall.

I fed my sav a 2' long gopher snake yesterday. It was the first time he ate a snake.

Wow thats a great way to get a lot of enemys fast, it sone thing to feed snakes to something that will only eat it like a coral, But to catch a wild snake and feed it to something that could go its whole life wihout eating a snake just for the fun of it. You make all monitor keepers look bad.

How do you feel about feeding tarantulas or scorpions?

FreedomDove Apr 04, 2007 08:34 AM

It was FRESH road kill. Sorry I should have specified that. I wouldn't catch a wild animal to feed my pets

Sorry for the blast if it was roadkill, there was a pic of of someone holding a gopher or a bull, and I was thinking that was kind of screwed up. But roadkills fair game as long as you arent scared of parasites.

That's me holding a gopher I found alive on a dirt road. Just picked him up for the pic and to move him off the road. They get run over all the time in Reno. Rattlers too.

I pull red diamonds and spther pacific rattles off the road all the time to, I keep my hook in the car now just because of that, and most normal people think a snakes a snake and runover everything because they think its venomous, then they wonder why there is mice everywhere in there houses

i would buy a garter snake or something harmless from a pet store, as they are less likely to have reptilian diseases or parasites such as mites, etc. plus, a venomous snake is well, venomous, it could be a danger to you and your monitor. if u managed to get one in his cage if he didnt eat it you would have to recapture it, and that wouldnt be fun.
