new sav

Pnev24 Apr 17, 2007 12:31 AM

I just got a sav today for my B-day(my gf bought him 4 me), he's abotu 18in eating great and a total sweetheart. his name is "skeeter". He does have a tendency to poop while you hold him, any suggestions on how to solve this would be grateful. Ive been visiting him 2-3 times weekly @ teh pet store for about the last month or two. I'll post pics once i figure out how to use a digital camera.

Hey, congrats on the monitor. Not a professional here but just a suggestion, you should keep his night temps at like 75 degrees F, and day temps around 85 to 95 degrees. Basking should be around 130. Sounds crazy but it's amazing how much more energy my monitor got when I regulated his temps and times. I personally use a sand/dirt mixture and feed "small mice" two every other day because he will not even look at a cricket. I also boil an egg for him once every other week. Makes for a nice treat. If he is nice already then you are lucky. I was feeding mine a mouse with tongs day before yesterday and he ignored the mouse and started leaping for my hand. I put the mouse away and picked up the monitor for a little while with gentle petting. Offered the mouse again and he took it immediately. They are gorgeous creatures and I wish you much luck. Sorry I couldn't offer more input. I am still learning too. Also, I would suggest multiple hides and regular baths often and for a couple of hours. He should use the bathroom in the tub. This may solve your bowel movements while holding.

Lose the aspen and shovel in some dirt, like lots of it. So he can burrow and maintain humidity in a burrow. HOT spot 130 . Cool side 75ish plus or minus.
He poops 'cause he doesn't like to be held. He is a monitor and that is their nature.
