Banana King snake?????

I am a 6th grade Science teacher with a question. For 4 years now I have had a magnificent classroom pet in the form of Zeus, my Speckled King Snake. Yesterday one of my students brought in his snake and gave it to me (he had gotten it from a friend who had gotten it from a friend....and all the mom's had said "NO!". It looks like a King, and after time researching I think it is some type of banana king. It is a beautiful brown color - almost maroon/ red - with a cream colored longitudinal stripe down his entire back. The stripe begins just behind his head - on his head is a cream colored diamond shape. The belly is also cream colored with brown flecks and the light color wraps up on his sides a bit.

So any ideas what this guy is?????

Sounds like the striped phase of the coastal (brown and cream) phase of the California king snake, _Lampropeltis getula californiae_. A banana king is one of the more extreme man-made variants of the California king.
