serious vitamin question

keelsey May 09, 2007 03:33 PM

ok for starters hello all- first post, but 20 year keeper, my question is basically about freezing vitamins, I find that the best way for me personally to deliver vitamins is injecting food items with vitamin/calcium supplement mixed with distilled water. some of my guys ignore vitamin dusted crickets, and beat/drag the vitamins off pinkies, so I shoot em up first, literally hah, but its a process/drag to do every feeding so to do so ahead of time and inject and refreeze, will it make vitamins less effective or even useless? sorry so long wanted to preface my feeding ritual, thanx in advance

Welcome, Keelsey!
I don't have a factual answer to your question but I'd like to point out some things to consider.

I don't know if the freezing will reduce the efficiency of the vitamins or not, but I tend to feel that it wouldn't. However, the potential is there.

I noticed that you used the word "refreeze." Refreezing thawed prey isn't a good habit, although I've done it a few times, myself. Once again, another "potential" is there.

And last, but not least, I don't feel there's a need to add vitamins and/or nutrients to every feeding of rodents. A multi-vitamin once in awhile (once a week, every two weeks, once a month, or whatever)isn't a bad idea but I think extra calcium and D3 could do more harm than good.

I know of several people that have raised monitors for many years, feeding them rodents, without adding calcium, etc...

Just something to consider. If nothing else, hopefully my input will entice more advice from others.

Take care!
HH

Freezing does destroy vitamin B1. I know for a fact that frozen vegetables and fish will have their vitamin B1, or Thiamine, destroyed when defrosted. But for some reason frozen meat are OK, which includes whole preys like mice and rats. I would feed your Sav whole mice which is nutritionally balanced...whole prey is nutritionally balanced, so you don't have to supplement your Sav with multivitamin.
