The end appeard to be black and possibly dead. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Yes, it's usually the result of an injury, and it will continue to creep up the tail. The tail is rotting on the inside, a form of gangrene. Get it to a vet so the vet can remove the bad section of tail & keep it from spreading.

That's waht I was afraid of, thanks. The real question is how it happened. This couldn't be the result of a bad shed could it? I just can't think how he could of injured himself.
Yes, it could be due to a bad shed, also. I see that my first reply was misleading, sorry about that.
Bad sheds are usually caused by too low humidity so you should check to make sure the cage's humidity is where it should be. Misting a shedding monitor a few times a day helps, but the overall cage humidity, if within range, is sufficient enough for proper shedding.
