light fixtures in a neodesha

imgonnamissher Sep 09, 2008 02:09 PM

I want to put a ceramic light fixture in one of my old 3 foot, slant front neodeshas for my juvie bearded dragon. I am wondering if anyone has done this and has any tips or precautionary tales before I try it. I was simply going to drill through and bolt it in to the highest point I could on one side. Also, what wattage would I use to get a basking area up to 100 degrees? I am assuming that I would not need much because the neo will hold heat considerably better than an aquarium. Perhaps even just the UVB bulb would be enough if I added a heating pad?

You don't need much with that cage. Because of the heat going up into the plastic, I do not recommend using a ceramic bulb. A UV bulb will keep the cage somewhat warm, and a low wattage (like 50 watt) halogen will provide a basking spot easily.

Thank you for the reply. I was hoping to only put one fixture in, but you suggested that I use a UV bulb and a spot light. Should I be putting two fixtures in? What about just one UVB bulb that gives off the heat as well like the powersun bulbs (or similar)? Also, when I said ceramic, I didn't mean a ceramic heat emitting device, but rather the fixture itself, instead of the plastic ones, for the light bulb to screw into. I apologize for any confusion, please chalk it up to my inexperience with all things electrical. I am basing this idea off of a search I did (google search "neodesha with light fixtures" where someone is/was selling a four footer with a fixture on each end. I wanted to do the same thing, but only at one end because of the smaller size of my neo.

I have a 3ft Neodesha that I ordered from them with an incandescent fixture. They recomended no more than a 60 watt bulb be used in it. The lowest wattage available for the Powersun and similar bulbs is 100 watts.
