Why the shortage of Insular Epicrates?

RyanT Sep 10, 2008 09:39 AM

I guess this would be the best forum for this. I've been actively searching for Haitians/Cubans/Biminis, etc. for a few months now, and haven't seen ANY. I know they're not very popular or in demand, but they have to be out there somewhere. Can anybody that would happen to know, share any pointers on how or when I can track them down? I'd prefer CB, of course. Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

Ryan,
....Just a couple of my opinions on the subject. Haitians were imported in big numbers for many years. Prices were very low for them. Many of them came in pretty rough and were difficult to tame in the hands of those novices who bought them because of the low prices. Cubans and the Bahamian Epicrates have been imported in very small numbers. Cubans also have a reputation for being biters. I think the Bahamian Epicrates are very desireable but there is the perception that many of their babies need lizards for early meals and take some time to switch to rodents. I would love to have some of the Bahamian or the Jamaican Boas.
...They are all great snakes.
Jeff

I've seen Cubans at a few of the shows, most notably Daytona. Haitians.....yeah, they used to come in all the time, but not lately. And as far as I'm concerned, they have the worst musk of any living reptile, lol

Jeff, actually baby Cubans bite like a lot of other baby boids but every big one I'VE HAD HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY TAME. I'll take some pics of some of our big ones soon and post them.....TC

There are only a handfull of herpers in the U.S. who are working with Insular Boas. We're working with a few types fairly successfully. They are NOT easy to find anymore. I'm enclosing a few pics for you to see.....TC

Tom, I'm sure you remember Tom Huff and the work he did with Epicrates years ago.

Absolutely, we were good friends and back in the day we did a lot of trades and breeding loans together. I was very sad when he finally lost the fight with cancer. He was one of the pioneers with West Indian Boas and it was a big loss to the herp community when he passed away.....TC

As I remember, he did a lot of breeding with the hopes that he could return some juvies to the wild...only to find that the "wild" had disappeared.
