Red tail keeps throwing up

epicreptiles Sep 10, 2008 01:18 PM

i just bought a trio of salmon boas and the first time i fed them they got live adult mice and they slammed them no problem. the last 2 feedings have been frozen thawed. the first f/t the mice were pretty wet and my females puked. so i chalked it up to being wet and having a possible cold spot second f/t feeding mice are perfect not wet and i made sure there was no cold spots. only one ate because the others wee in shed. and the one female threw up again only this was 5 days later instead of 2.

Assuming that all these boas are in good body condition, skip the next two feedings. After 2-3 weeks, offer a small to moderately sized prey item (if adults are the normal prey, try a hopper). During all of this time, be sure that husbandry is spot on, basking temps are appropriate, and the cage is neither to hot, nor to cold.
Get back to us if there is still a problem

The next time one of them defecates, immediately bag it and take it to a vet; ask them to check for parasites.
If they're having issues keeping food down, check for odd behaviors such as stargazing (staring off into the distance etc). Flip them over onto their backs and see how much trouble they have getting back upright. If they have too much trouble, or are too rigid when they do get up, it may be IBD, an always fatal disease in boids. If you get any new snakes, remember to quarantine them for 3-6 months so that they can't get infected. Good luck to you I hope all goes well.

This is absolutely worst-case. Totally not the thing to check out first, given the information. It would be like immediately worrying about a brain tumor if you have a couple headaches.

Very unlikely Boas regurged due to wet rodents. True BCC such as Surinams, Guyanans,Etc. frequently regurge if fed rodents too large or too frequently. Salmons usually do not have the same problem. Wait at least 3 weeks before feeding again and then start out with a small item. If Boa holds it down, feed again every 10 days to 2 weeks and gradually increase from there if all goes well. The key is to not get impatient and feed too soon again. I would also dispose of the frozen rodents you were using and get some new ones in case you have some bad rodents causing problem. Good luck.
