Patternless Albino Ball?

amy Sep 05, 2003 07:45 PM

I don't come to this forum that often but i was wondering if anyone has ever produced a patternless Albino Ball Python? The reason i ask is because there is what i believe to be one at the local petstore. It is yellow with faint/faded orange peices of stripes in some places. He is so cool! And very tame. he is a male and about 2-3 feet long with nice body mass. eats large rats. or small rabbits. He was abandoned at the pet store because his owners thought he was too agressive but he is so gentle. he has been up for sale for a while and the reptile guy was going to buy him but he hasn't yet so i don't think he has enough fo rhim. Let me know if it is possible that he is a patternless albino. Thanks! Also how much is he worth?

I don't think so. But how do you tell? They have burmese pythons there but they look nothing like the Patternless Albino.

Well an adult Green(paternless)Albino Burmese would be solid yellow. No one is going to just give an Albino Ball to a pet store, they are worth $2000 and up. An Albino Burm goes for only about $200 or so. I would imagine the one you saw was bigger than the 3' you described if it is eating jumbo rats or rabbits. My guess is that the Burm got too big for the owner and they had to get rid of it, happens all too often.

I said large(i guess regular) rats not jumbos and small rabbits(young/babies) the store breeds their own stuff so they don't have sizes labled. but the rabbit was actually slightly smaller than a large rat. Also the snake is definately in the size i described. and definately no more than 4 feet. It is about the same size as one of my adult female corn snakes. I had her with me on the day i first saw/ held it. I just measured her and she is 42 inches long. next time i go to the store i'll see if i can get a pic but that won't be for at least a week or so becasue i just bought mice this week and won't need more till later. Also i live in Alaska and most people here don't know anything at all about all the different types of snakes and most are therefore naive. (i was offered $10 for my butter corns-both females- by some guy who thought "They are pretty...They would be good companions for my little kingsnake...BTW what do you feed them?"

Anyway is there anyother way to tell the difference between burms and balls?

too much pattern. the little bit of pattern that the snake has is in thinner stripe pieces and the color is close but the snake is lighter.

did the store have a price marked on the animal in question. normal albino ball hatchlings are going for 2-4 thousand an adult at 3 feet would be in the 5 thousand plus range. i couldnt imaging that a patternless albino ball would be in a store and if it was it would have to be 10 thousand or more.my guess is it is a light in color and reduced striping albino patternless burm.

It is a burm, no doubt about it. I have seen albino greens with full dorsal stripes, similar to what you described in this "mystery snake". A 4 ft ball would be rather girthy, whereas a 4 ft burm would still be long and lanky, similar to your corn snake you described. The head shape is significantly different as well; burms have a rectangular head, whereas balls have more of a rounded, or "figure 8" shaped head. Besides, if such a ball python existed, I seriously doubt that it would have made its way up to Alaska to some pet shop, instead of being snatched up by the big guns like ralph, sutherlands, or vpi, and introduced into a breeding project.

If it does turn out to be a weird albino ball, I'll buy it off of you for $200 -lol

he is fat not thin like my corns. next time i go to the store i'll try to get a pic and look at his head. i remember that is was not as long as the burm heads i've seen, but i'll go look again.

That would be a burmese python, worth about $0.00, and I find it hard to believe that a 2-3 foot snake is eating rabbits.
