NORTH BAY NUGGET (Ontario) 11 September 08 Turtles not on the menu
A Scarborough man caught gathering endangered turtles for exotic meals was fined $10,000 Wednesday in a Sarnia court.
Kung Wing So, 52, pleaded guilty to two 2007 offences under the Species at Risk Act for unlawful possession of 27 turtles.
In addition to the fine, So was ordered not be near any area for three years where an endangered or threatened species could be expected to be found. He was also prohibited from consuming any food made from an endangered or threatened species.
It was the first Ontario conviction under the federal legislation, said federal prosecutor Michael Robb.
The law was created in 2004 to guard against the extinction of threatened or endangered plants and animals.
There have few prosecutions across Canada, said Robb, adding the sentencing will be influential in future prosecutions, he said.
