At the waterin' hole...

CrimsonKing Sep 11, 2008 06:06 PM

....for grins I snapped this quick pic of one of my most recent aquisitions from R.S. Cox wetting her whistle, so to speak.
A female from a group of 1.3 adult north Florida panhandle mole kings that shows some nice color for the area.

I know they'll produce some pretty li'l ones next season.
Added to another half dozen of these guys and gals breeding again next year, (along with lots of other locales) I will have my hands full again no doubt.

They are underrated in my opinion..
Do you plan on keeping any in the future?

I never planned on keeping any snakes at ALL! So planning has very little to do with it, evidently.

But, kidding aside, I would be interested to know more about them. Like how their temperament compares with my brooksis, are they finicky eaters, how big do they get and are they really expensive.

Yeah, I guess many of us didn't "plan" on keeping so many snakes, huh? haha.
As for temperment, they are laid back as they can be. Hatchlings can be feisty at first but always calm down. In most instances they are not flighty like some milks but again, as hatchlings, they can be.
Alert snakes that seem to look for you when you enter the room, they will definitely check out most anything that comes their way.
They do love to have a hide, or better, just substrate to bury into.
Babies can be finicky for sure with maybe 1/3 or less taking f/t pinks right away. Live pinks are taken by another few and most times I end up giving them a head start w/various techniques. That may include scenting, assist feeding, or force feeding...depending on my resources at hand and mostly my patience.
Once started on a feeding regimen they are almost as dependable as any other Lampropeltis.
They are inexpensive snakes and great to observe as well.

Very nice, Mark. Are those hard to get going as hatchlings (assuming one doesn't have an unlimited supply of tiny skinks)?
