Egg hatching problems?

ObamaFan Sep 11, 2008 06:39 PM

I had a clutch of Abbott corns pretty much all fungus up this summer. I carefully twisted the bad eggs from the clutch and it looks like the 3 remaining aggs are good.

One hatched last night, the other has slits in it, but the 3rd is just sitting there.

So the question: How long should I wait before slitting the egg shell?

Thanks!

I wouldn't call it a problem yet at all, odds are the other one will hatch by tomorrow. But generally, I will carefully slice the other eggs if they don't pip on their own about 48 hours after the first one does, just to be on the safe side.

best regards, ~Doug

You just use an exato-knife or similar and gently cut into the egg shell? Sounds risky, but better than loosing the snake.

I use a very small pair of Mustache scissors, or cuticle scissors that have a nice sharp point, then poke it in the direction lengthwise of the egg, then cut very shallowly along the top, being VERY careful to keep the bottom blade just below the surface of the eggs.

I'm sure many other's may use a different method, but this has always worked just fine, and I've never had an incident in many years of doing it.

I cut the eggs on these after a couple days of the first ones pipping as well

And a hypo Lav to keep with the corn theme

i use nail clippers... they are only used for egg purposes and washed and dried after each clutch. not to be used on anything else!!
