Cypress mulch

dave79 Sep 12, 2008 09:25 PM

I've seen it posted on this forum about cypress mulch actually increasing a snakes feeding response. Any thoughts or comments on this? Thanks

you put a wild baby ball (yes they think they are wild) in a plastic tub with paper towels and a plastic water bowl and maybe a plastic hide.......it has no idea where it is and why

you put a wild baby ball into a plastic tub with over an inch of moist cypress (that smells like dirt after awhile) with a ceramic water bowl and a cork hide......it smells alot better to them and they will eat alot more than not......

smells....it's the way of life for a ball (actually for all animals.....even humans)

yes I heard of it and yes I experienced it more than once...

some balls eat no matter what...some don't eat no matter what......it's the undecided ones we need to help all we can

.....also......I have all the snakes in one room.....warm,humid enough, and with over 300 right now..it just smells friendly to them.....they can smell that snakes are around them....just like a den ...

I looked for large quantities today and couldnt find it. Where do you all get your cypress mulch? Thanks

robyn@ProExotics Sep 14, 2008 12:45 AM

In the Southeast, you can find Cypress on every corner, 30 lb for $1.

The further west you go, the the harder it is to find. Here in Colorado, I have found it at ONE single spot, and it certainly isn't a dollar. In California, forget it altogether.

Zoo Med makes a cypress product, called Forest Floor. Small bag, big bucks. We sell a large bag of Cypress, the 30 lb bags, but they aren't cheap, to either purchase or ship.

Great substrate though, love it for snakes and lizards.

Home Depot should still have some. Not sure about lowes. Menards also carrys it. I tend to stock up in spring during planting season. If you check your gardening supply stores, you can get it year round, but in winter it tends to go up in price, at least here in the midwest.

We get ours at ACE Hardware $3.79 for 30lb bags.
You have to have them special order it, but it works good.

Cool, thanks Josh. I think Robyn is right, its alot harder to find on the west coast. The Home Depots here dont have it. Ill try Ace for sure. Thanks!

I just picked up two bags at Home Depot yesterday...$2 a bag. Can't say how much they weigh, maybe 15-20 lbs each? Just says "2 cu ft"

Again like Pro Exotics said it depends on where you live. The Home Depots in Oregon that i have called or looked dont carry it. Neither does anyone else.

jnjreptiles Sep 14, 2008 05:47 PM

Same deal here, ACE is the only place that I have found that carries it. Its not the best, as it is single milled but better than nothing. We checked Kamlar as they have the best triple milled cypress and it was a minimum order of 1800 bags to get it delivered.

Good luck with ACE.

Let me see, 1800 bags, going through 2 bags a week, hmmmmm...

900 weeks worth : )

(we go through more than 2 bags a week, but still, a semi truckload of cypress is a lot of mulch!)
