Neonate cage pics PLEASE.

briangg Sep 13, 2008 03:38 PM

As you guys know, my copperhead had 5 healthy little ones. I'm going to build a cage next weekend and if you guys would be nice enough to post a picture of an appropriate cage, I would really appreciate it. Is it OK to house all 5 together? I know it's too soon for these guys to start feeding but I found a newt and was wondering if I should keep it and try to feed it to them after the first shed or do you think this would be a bad idea and I should start them on pinkies? Any help in this matter to keep my babies happy would be greatly appreciated. I'm going back to release the mother exactly where I caught her tomorrow. Thanks guys. I also want to tell you people that I have had venomous snakes for years in the past "never neonates though"but I feel like a fool and sometimes I am but the reason this time is that I thought I could tell a copperhead from a baby black rat snake a mile away but I have to admit and I am totally shocked that being that the neonates are gray and are nowhere the color of an adult, had I seen the neonate moving quickly through the leaves, I wouldn't have hesitated to pick it up. Man I feel stupid. These babies have taught me that I really do have to look closely before grabbing.

A simple plastic "shoe-box" set-up will work just fine for the neonate copperheads. Use paper towels for substrate, add small water bowl and they will do fine.

Randal hit it pretty close. If you want them to feed they will have to be kept separately. I also like to "double bag" my venomous babies by keeping the shoes boxes in another cage or aquarium with a tight fitting lid. This just makes keeping up with them a little easier. I would also add a piece of bark for a hide to each cage. Have a secure hide will help in stimulating their natural sit and wait predator instincts. I would try live day old pinkies, then fresh killed one placed in front of the hide. If you can without too much disturbacne get them to strike the prey item, then drop it and cause as little disturbance in the room as possible. If all that fails, you are back to finding small lizards or perhaps scenting pinkies with lizard or frog. Good luck.

That's nice that your father is willing to let you do that. The only time I had a venomous snake at my parents house, was when I was 16 years old and hid a copperhead in the basement. They never new it until I told them 10 years later. They laugh about it now but they wouldn't have then lol.

LOL , yea he doesn't mind at all. He and his brother would always go out and catch copperheads when they were younger and keep them for a while. Whenever I'm out of town on vacation he's the one who comes to my house and takes care of my snakes and other animals for me. Now my stepmom on the otherhand, is terrified of snakes. All my cages with the snakes are in his office out in his garage but the iguana and other lizards are in the house.

Yep. Bad windstorm. The wind actually blew a window out of my house. Lots of damage to all of the surrounding counties. My power was off for about 60 hours just came back on a little bit ago. So tomorrow it's gonna be animal moving time. Gonna bring them back home. I bought a generator today for the next time my power goes out...
