Spaghnam Moss Question

Joeycoco98 Sep 13, 2008 03:39 PM

Anyone use this as a substrate year round other than to hatch eggs. I started using it with my kings and milks. It does not mold and is absorbent. Just wondering if anyone else uses it in the same way and what your experience has been.

Thanks,
Miller

I mix some of it in with my aspen to hold a bit more humidity/moisture, and have been quite happy with it. I'd say its a 70/30 mix of aspen/sphagum. My Brooks really seems to like it.

Thanks for the feedback, I purchased a huge bag from Home Depot to incubate a clutch of eggs and decided to use it for bedding as not to waste the leftover. I am very pleased with it. It was cheaper than a bag of aspen and I think it contains the smell of the poop a lot better. Thanks again.

sometimes I will provide hide boxes stuffed full of moss that has been moistened. Everybody loves to burrow in that, big and small. Sometimes I have to dig them out to offer food...

anyhow, sphagnum moss is one of my favorite herpetocultural "tools".

Dear Miller,

I use sphagnum moss a lot, it is just great for filling a box and letting your kings hang out prior to shedding. I also use it year around with my Indigos, they spend a lot of time in the box with it, very moist when shedding and damp always. I have not had any problems with skin infections etc. I agree, it is a very useful "tool" for herpetolculture. Vic H.

Thanks for the feedback, i think I am going to continue to use it as amy main subsrate. I am glad no one has had any bad experiences with it as a main substrate.

Thanks again,
Miller
