Very Interesting Clutch

rkreptiles Sep 13, 2008 04:58 PM

We purchased this female a little over 2 years ago because we thought she resembled a het red animal as well as a Yellow Belly but had a different belly which is very busy with pattern more so than a normal YB. We call her Busybelly for this reason. Last season we bred her to a YB with no eggs produced. This years we bred her to our spider male and received 9 eggs. Well we did not get any spiders in the clutch but all 9 animals look almost identical to mom with the same pattern, blushing and the same belly characteristics. There is one that looks like a cross between mom and a YB as it shows more blushing and belly like a YB but the alien head pattern like mom. Here is a pic of the mother and the clutch of babies (less the one that has not completely come out of the egg yet). Let me know what everyone thinks this might be. She (and the babies) might just be exceptional normals but are very interesting.

Hmmm. That in itself (while possible), seems odd for me. Not sure what to make of them though.

Ai agree it is very wierd. I was hoping for more spiders but sometimes it just does not happen the way we want it to. Now to decide what to do with this clutch as well.

If the spider fathered the whole clutch the odds of missing 9 times in a row are 1 in 512. It's certainly possible but maybe she retained sperm from the year before.

She honestly looks completely normal to me. But very interesting that she has the "hook" I've recently learned is commonly a marker for something genetic. I had never noticed it before, but it's true. I'm catching them on so many proven animals now. Learn something new everyday, I guess. I'd say pick a nice male out of the clutch and facilitate a little incest ASAP.

Ryan, what's "the hook"?

RyanT Sep 14, 2008 09:15 AM

On that snake, it's the marking on it's upper back that looks like a lower case "b" that isn't fully connected. It's not a guarantee, but a good sign to look for, according to what I've just learned recently.

I had a 5 egg clutch Spider x normal that came out with no Spiders.
I raised the normal mom from a baby & this is the first year she was bred so there's no retained sperm.

I've got seven normals out of eight eggs crawling out today.Sometimes that's just the way it goes.
