Let me know what you guys think?
I am using 70 quart tubs.
I tried to make this rack light weight.
I used 1/15 metal studs and track. 25 guage. I framed is with track and then put a couple stubs in the middle for strenght and support.

Then I added 1/8" peg board on both sideds.

The shelves are hollow to allow air flow.

heat tape.

10 levels high. Its not the lightest rack but it works so far.

I used 1" and 5/8 metal studs
Friggin' fantastic as is the pic of your snake room and all the preceeding photos of the snakes. I'm continually amazed by the the morphs you've got in the Pit genus. Keep on keepin' on.

That is a great idea, I have access to that sort of material all the time and never thought to utilize it. Thanks for the great idea, mind if i steal it, lol
dc
No problem. Thats why I posted it. Its cheap to build too. One peice of trak is around $2.50 each and same price for the studs. The peg board was about about 9 bucks and I could get 4 peices out of it. The trak is one sold peice, I just cut the sides and wrapped it.
I think it would killer for 32 quart tubs if you just went one row wide and ten high.
Jason
That was one of my plans, modify to different tub sizes. Most of my snakes are corns now, I only have a few bulls and ruthveni.
I am in the process of building a new snake building with all new racks so the timing of your idea is perfect. Thanks again and I'll send you pics when they are complete, installed and in use.
One part of the design I am going to try and work on is how to add casters to it. My thoughts are to add the to the bottom shelf but until I build one, I can't see how to do this. That would negate the heavy weight of the rack if I could roll it around.
dc
Do the panhead screws on the front of the rack shelves present an issue for opening the cages?
I have 1/8" gap between top shelve and tub. I have one tight level. I have to use both hands to open it. They open okay, its not the smoothest but it works.
Do you got any ideas how to make it smoother? With more minds and ideas, it could be done better.
Jason
Not right off hand, let me think about it. Witht he board being thin you can't counter sink it. I think you have made the best fastener selection for the application. If I think of anything, I will let you know. Thanks again for the idea
dc
Is the lack of smoothness due to the fasteners? Is that what you mean?
One alternative that I can think of it rivets, specifically the ones with conical heads. When you predrilled for them you could just slightly countersink and then the pressure of setting the rivet should cause them to sink into the slightly softer interior of the pegboard.
It's a more permanent attachment but they can always be drilled out if the pegboard needs replacing. Or you could just use plastic pegboard.
You should post these pictures over on the Cage & Habitat forum. Neat idea and design.

Cool Jason. I just picked up some bulls from y'all at Daytona so need to start thinking about stuff like this. Are those the 74 qt Sterilite bins? What other size bins have you and others successfully housed bulls in? Are you housing your huge bulls in that or going to start housing your bulls in that sized bin?
yeah I am house some large Bulls in these tubs. I think they are 70 quarts or 74. Most of the time they are coiled up in the hide boxes anyway. I would like to find some larger tubs as well.
Jason
wow, that's an impressive looking snake room jason! do you ever have any spare time? lol......i'm down to 1 rack now & remodeled it recently eliminating the same type tubs & replacing them w/ screen doors. every 2 compartments are connected via a hole in the floor. it's very easy to clean which is what i was aiming for, less work! i used to keep my cribos in there but they kinda outgrew it. now it houses my largest pits....
