Eastern Milk Question

54podge Sep 15, 2008 03:25 PM

I have a baby eastern that was found on a road here in KY. I am sure this little munchkin was probably only a day or two outside the egg when found. It is now 3 weeks later, and I am still trying to get him to feed. Saturday, after leaving a live pink in with him overnight, I walked in to find him finally feeding. Unfortunately, he saw me and released the freshly killed pink, and made for cover (10 more minutes........).

My question is, how long before I should supply him with another pink? He was obviously full of yolk upon birth, because he still looks remarkably healthy. I just don't want to overwhelm him.

You are very lucky. If he went for the live pink one time he will go for it again. I would try right away or in a few days. The overnight idea is a good one. then wait a week or so and try a second one

eastern milks sometimes require a little more enticing as well. If it does not take the next pinky try a frozen and thawed one. Rinse it off to get the pinky smell off, pierce the skull, and rub its brains all over its body, and leave it in over night. Don't ask me why, but that trick is the only thing I've gotten to work with young eastern milks.

In regard to your question though, I would not worry about stressing it out too much by offering food again right away. If it had actually swallowed the food and regurgitated it then you would need to wait but I think it should be fine.

When washing the pinkie smell off, it sometimes helps to use bar soap (preferably non-scented) to get rid of all the smell. I've done that with some of my problem feeders and it's worked well, though I've never tried it with any N.A. milks.
