I can't site anything specific, but when I was buying my big cage and looking into this issue, I decided to go with RHP. The deciding factor was that overhead heat was more natural. I was hoping that RHP with a thermostat would be more energy efficient, but the Burm cage runs wide open. The boa cage on top is heated both ways, I guess. It gets the rising heat from the cage below, plus it has its own RHP. That thermostat is kept on the very low end of the spectrum.
I personally use Flexwatt heat tape for belly heat because most snakes like Burmese pythons, stay terrestrial once they hit a certain size and the RHP is great for Arboreal snakes like GTP, and Scrub Pythons.
