ALRIGHT!! FIRST CLUTCH!!

MJCAdawg Sep 05, 2003 10:50 PM

Well, the title says it all. I got home from school today and noticed my 2.1 auratus were actin kinda weird. Wherever they were they were all together, and then it clicked. It was sooo funny seein the 2 males compete for the female- one would jump in front and the female would follow it around, and she was like twitchin the whole time. And then the other male would jump in front and she'd follow it. They played follow the leader for about an hour and a half or so, and then got down to business. I actually got to see my female laying the eggs and everything- she laid them on a leaf right out in the open, and then i saw my male come back and fertilize it. It was really cool to see.

Okay, so onto the real stuff. I know that usually the first couple ofclutches don't turn out that great and everything, and i wasn't really expecting eggs so soon. Keep in mind this is my first clutch of all time so it's pretty exciting. Before they laid, though, i told myself i'd let them take care of the first surviving clutch, because i'm not ready in terms of supplies and everything to handle the tads. And I know, everybody says to take them out, but i'm not this time.

So, now to my questions--- Is there anything that I need to do? I know that the male takes them to a pool, which i have, but how do they feed? Will I have to do anything? Should I mist my terrarium the same way i usually do, or should i lighten it up a little bit to make sure the eggs don't mold? Will the female breed with my other male(who she was chasing after, and i thought he wasn't ready) while there's still eggs? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a ton to you experts out there!

Congratulations,
I haven't even gotten to see the whole event like you have.First off, where are the eggs located? If they are out in the open they may get trampled by the frogs so I would remove them.I have a 2.1 in my auratus's tank so yes she will go back and forth with each male, they will keep her excited so she may lay again in maybe 2 weeks if conditions are right. You really don't need alot of"supplies" to raise the tads.I have coconut huts in my frogs tank with pringles lids under them and the female was laying eggs on them.I would take the clutchs out and put the lid into the 1/2pint deli cups and cover the clutch with water, enough to fill the pringles lid, and put a lid on it.Once they hatched I put the tads into deli cups and raised them on fish food,Omega tropical fish flakes and spirulina flakes.I have over 20 froglets now so I have stopped mine from breeding by drying them out some and not feeding them every day like I was.Hope this helps. You can e-mail me if you need more help.I have been through the ordeal you have and have learned alot what not to do's.Good luck, they are great frogs!!!!!

Mark,

Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated. Okay, to answer your question, the eggs were on a leaf, so i cut the leaf and put it in a little styrofoam bowl that my frogs first came in. Now I have a question-- where is the best place to find these infamous "deli cups?" I've heard about these for ages from breeders, but never really knew where to go. I figured like kroger or walmart-- are they actually called deli cups? And where do i find them- in the deli section? lol. Also, do you put anything in the cups with the tads like a leaf or anything or is it just water and the tads? Just one in each cup to avoid cannibilism, right? Also, can the froglets eat the Melonagaster FF's, or do i need to get some sprintails?
Thanks
Kasey

I buy my deli cups at smart and final. Just the water and the tadpole. They usually can eat the melangoster, but it wont hurt to get a springtail culture going, drop me a e-mail and I can send you a starter culture for free, you would just have to pay the approx. shipping of three dollars. Send me a e-mail at jakeviper33710@yahoo.com

I have bought my deli cups at the meat counter at my local supermarket.I have raised them both in groups and separate. They take longer in groups but it would take alot of room for sinlge deli cup and over 20 tads so some of the clutches were raised in shoeboxes. What I did was set them up with oak leaves so they had some space between them.I did lose some to canniblism so separate is probably your best choice.BYW,I use oak leaves in ro water for raising the tads, more or less a tadpole tea.Good luck...................Mark W.
