breeding

I'm gonna be acquire a second kingsnake soon from a friend who can't care for it anymore unfortunately and this got me thinking into possibly trying to breed him with my current snake. I'm not sure of a couple things though.

1. Does anyone have a good place to look for a guide on how to breed kingsnakes?

2. I seem to recall having to force them into some form of hibernation period, is this necessary (I'm not sure I have the setup or room to have a cool room and a warm room)

3. Can you breed a california king with a blotched king (goini)

Thanks
Phil

Yes, check the "Features" tab at the top of this page.

It is not necessary, but some feel cycling increases fertility.

3. Can you breed a california king with a blotched king (goini)

Yes...but don't do it. lol

Please do the hobby a very large favor, and totally SCRATCH that idea altogether!

Can someone drink a fifth of hard liquor in an hour, then attempt to drive?,....the answer is yes,...is it smart, absolutely not...........Same applies to this situation.

best regards, ~Doug

Alright I'm glad to see that people are so welcoming to newcomers to the hobby. Both responses are really arrogant and condescending.

Obviously if I'm asking the question it's because I don't know what the consequences are . Something is only stupid if the consequences of your action are known and therefore equating this to drinking and driving is ridiculous.

Now if someone could be helpful and inform me why this is such a horrible idea, I'd love to hear it.

Now someone can "do the hobby a favor ", as some would say and maybe inform me?

Many times these (intergrade and hybrid) animals end up being misrepresented in the hobby, sometimes on purpose and sometimes because the person buying or selling just has no idea.

This happens even with so called pure or wild type snakes just as often (misrepresentation either on purpose or out of ignorance).

Animal rights movements and PETA folks seek to revamp State Laws across the country and regulate native species, ironically hybrids can not be regulated (or even identified?) and may soon be the only legal snakes to own in certain states (if State Game agencies and legislators are allowed to go unchecked).

If you decide to do the breeding, always represent your animals for exactly what they are.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense. I'll pass on breeding these 2 and maybe look at getting another blotched to attempt breeding.

...I re-read my response and I fail to see how it was rude? You asked questions, I answered them. In case you didn't notice the smiley, it was there to signify a playful statement. Hybrids are a bit of a contentious subject around here.

In any case, you're welcome.
