Any Med-School Students in the club?

JaredHorenstein Sep 16, 2008 08:32 AM

I was just curious if there are any Med-School students keeping herps? Reason ˆ ask is I am curious to know the work load and how it will affect my ability to keep my collection.....I am going back to school now to become a Surgical Tech and then to Med School next year (09).

I have a pretty big collection which I am cutting down to the bare minimum that I think I will be able to handle while I am working/studying....I breed and collect Boas, Balls and GTP's........all of which are going to be sold except for my Dwarf Boa projects and my Hypo Reverse Striped Panamanians......I think in total I will keep about 20 or so animals. I just wanted to get opinions from anyone in the field.

Here is a pic to keep it on topic

I'm in community college this semester but I'll be at OSU next semester full time (again) for vet school....

I run a rescue, and have at times 15 dogs, 20 so odd reptiles, a few cats, ferrets, rabbits, birds, plus all the paperwork that goes along with them.... I also have 2 small children, one of which is having her skull cracked monday to remove a brain tumor... AND i have a decent personal collection of reptiles to maintain....

I think you can do it if you REALLY want to... and if my small collection is enough to keep me going... that picture you posted alone would keep me going...

I think you'll do just fine-- just keep looking for the bigger picture and motivate yourself. I drive a Chrysler Crossover but I have a mercedes keychain thing that I see every day-- keeps me focused and reminds me what I'm working so hard for...

Anywho... I'm off my soapbox now... lol

Medical school is busy but certainly you could maintain a small collection and breed animals. If you have a good science training then the first two years of medical school are easy and there will be no problem. In your 3rd year when you hit the floors there will a few rotations like Surgery when you will be out more than in. Try and arrange those rotations during breeding season when you won't be as busy with snakes. The real question will be what you choose for your residency. If you choose surgery then it would be hard to keep a collection. If you choose something like radiology or pathology, my specialty, you could definitely keep a collection. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Jared,

well i just graduated nursing program. I will say this, it sucked big time and I'm sure my collection is no-where near yours but I made it through it and I'm sure you can too. I wish you the best of luck.
