If they are both 9", then they're most likely both female. With sliders it seems to be size, not age, that determines age of reproduction, and in my limited experience, 6" and up seems to be the breeding size for sliders. I once had an 8" female lay 13 eggs. Males have long front nails, and a thicker, longer tail than females, and males are smaller than females when full-grown.
Enjoy your new turtles, but don't get any males - we have plenty of sliders now that need new homes.

just curious, have recently been given 2 RES, both 4 years old, both about 9 inches long...currently living outdoors..was told that they are male and female, just wondering if anyone knows how old they have to be before they might breed... have heard that box turtles don't reach sexual maturity until around 10 years...wondered if it was the same for RES.
