Pastel x Pastel vs Albino x Albino - What is a better bang for your buck and Why?

uraoddball Sep 05, 2003 11:33 PM

I am new to all this, and maybe I am crazy, but why is a Pastel pair cheaper than an Albino pair? Normally a Pastel female is cheaper than an Albino female, this is puzzling to me. As adults Pastel females are far more valuable than an Albino females.

The Pastels are co-dom so the price has dropped faster than the albino. The best bang for your buck would be to buy a pastel male and 3-4 normal females.

JMHO, FWIW, YMMV.

I understand what is cheapest way to go and I know at which pair is cheaper to buy. But money not withstanding, why would I buy 1.5 Albinos for more than as 1.5 Pastels. As adults its a no brainer, Pastels are worth more. So in my opinion baby Pastels are worth more than baby Albinos. Yes, yes I know which one is easier to make.

Well you would not want to buy 1.5 albinos
you can buy 1.0 albinos and 0.5 hets

Or if you dont have any more than 1200
Buy a baby male pastel and lots of baby females.
Grow them up....and you would get a better percentage return for your money.

I think

Okay 1.5 Pastels at $750 and $1,500 = $8,250
1.5 Albinos at $2,000 and $2,000 = $12,000
1.0 Albino at $2,000 and .05 het Albinos at $650 = $5,250

As Adults with 4 good eggs each
*Pastels - 5 Supers $15,000 each and 10 pastels at $2,250
pair. Total $86,250
*Albinos - 20 Albinos at $2,000 each. Total $40,000
*Hets Albinos - 10 Albinos at 2,000 each. Total $20,000
These are sell out prices this year.

1.0 Albino 0.4 Hets 2000 (650x4)=4600
1.0 Pastel 0.4 Normals 1200 (4x30)=1320 Total 5920

It sounds like you are looking mainly for maximum profit. Having 8 females possibly producing eggs would be what I would choose. Of course you run the risk of having trouble with one of the males. Getting extra males could insure against that and allow breeding room for more females. Just my .02

Pastels are by far more bang for your buck right now. You can get a pair of pastels for around $3000. A pair of albinos will set you back about $5000. Breeding your pastels together will result in pastels($1000-2000) and super pastels($15000-18500). With albinos you will get more albinos(2500-3500). Another thing to consider is that the male will breed before the female. With the pastel when bred to normal you will get more pastels. With the albino you will get hets for albino. I think it would be easier for someone just getting started to sell a visible morph than hets. Clay

I think the overwhelming consensus is Pastels would be the better bang for your buck. It definitely would be a quicker return with money invested. You will have the chance to produce super Pastels, which are going for a pretty penny. The bottom line is the better bang for your investment would be Pastels, there is a quicker return in the capabilities of this project. Also down the road if you added a spider to you investment project, well it adds to your return in relatively short time period opposed to a simple recessive project.
