9 times out of 10, a problem feeder is the subject of improper husbandry. They are ambush hunters, and are more likely to feed at night. I prefer deep substrate, but you have to make sure your temps in the substrate aren't too cool. I've always started CH animals on live Rat fuzzies, and WC adults on large live Rat Pups.

Well, you know the fate of this animal. I'm not very surprised there might have been improper husbandry issues before I bought the animal..
BTW, how do you make newspaper a deep substrate. Going back to basics with a slightly older baby, so I could use tips. Frankly, most of my neonate snakes have been gluttons, even Ball Pythons who later went on long fasts as adults.

Lots of layers and crumpling it instead of laying it flat.

Will many layers detract from my undertank heat source?? Crumpled papers I have no problem with!

Somewhat, but my bloods do tend to burrow, I believe if you look back at some of Kara's photo posts you will see hers do the same. I put about 4-5 pieces down flat and then add some crumpled.

My tank currently has 3 layers & I added some crumpled paper too. Of course, I havent't actually tried to feed this newer baby yet, he hasn't been here but 4 days. I have my fingers crossed on this one! Wish me luck, it was certainly a heartbreaker with the smaller baby..
Sincerely,
Matthew
The new baby just scarfed, and I mean SCARFED down a rather large hopper ( more like a young adult mouse..). It took all of 5 minute for him to smell & then catch it.

I'll say! LOL
The difference between the ailing baby & this one couldn't be more apparent. Last I saw he had his body up in the air & I saw a mouse tail slide down like a sphagetti noodle..
