Can I feed my vieled clover?

jrbl Sep 05, 2003 11:41 PM

I found some clover growing in my yard, and I picked a few leaves and a few flowers for my vieled chameleon. He really liked the clover flowers, but he only ate a couple leaves. I know lots of animals love to eat clover and I think it has some vitamins and stuff, but I dont know if it is okay for chameleons to eat it. If it is okay to feed it to them, I was thinking about planting some clover in some of the little nooks and crannies in his cage. Also, my vieled had this infected eye thing, and it is better, but around his eye is some green stuff around his eye. It is on his eyebrow and has a little behind his eye. It seems to kinda flake off some, but most of it seems concrete. When it flakes off, it takes whole scales with it and there is just white left, and sometimes it even bleeds. I have some oral and topical antibiotics(baytril and teramyicin) I got from the vet; he told me to give it to him for a week, but I dont want his eye to get infected from the green stuff. I have been putting the topical antibiotic on him, but should I start him back on the oral? I dont really want to go back to the vet for this, but if I have to I will. Thanks for the help, jrbl

You could probably feed a chameleon clover..... I'm not sure that they would go to the bottom of the cage and eat it from the ground though (try it). Alot of times when I plant certain things in indoor cages (like outdoor plants) they don't do very well. I planted a few vegetables in an indoor cage 5 or 6 years ago and they would sprout and die soon after (needed more heat or maybe just different soils than I had for them). Grass is another thing that kinda took off then died for me. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong! Nowadays I keep it simple and stick with my all time favorite, HIBISCUS (if it seems like I'm a fan of this plant, you're right). I'm only hanging on to my ficus plants until they die.

clover IS very nutritious, but it needs alot of light.
I would try to get the dried puss off with a good long warm misting, a warm wet cloth, then antibiotic salve and a q-tip, if he is still "oozing" I would put him back on the oral for another week, be sure and keep him hydrated, I lost a savannah from too many oral antibiotics and not enough water! Just don't pull the dried green stuff off if this makes him bleed, this could let in more infection, try to get it softened first.

My entire backyard is nothing but clover.
Along with the powdered gutload, I put a handfull of clover in with my crickets every few weeks.

I am pretty sure that it is high in vitamin A. (Not sure though) So, I wouldn't over-do it.

I have never fed clover directly to my chameleons.
