I have been trying to prove out a 100% het albino Ball Python for about the last 7 years. During this time she has frustrated me beyond belief. I picked her up as a 1600 gram proven female 100% het albino. You can imagine what I paid back then for her - ouch!

Where do I start? Well for starters, she arrived 300 grams under the stated weight. Not really a big deal I guess but still irks me. Then she refused to feed for over 6 months and when she started to feed, it was on a small rat once a month.

For 4 or so years, she was bred to my albino and did not produce a single egg. I started to question my sexing ability and had a friend come over and double-check (thanks Rob!).

Finally, two years ago, she lays 9 eggs. All seemed fine, although, weak veining. 8 died: the first in two weeks and the others at about 7 days apart all the way until one egg left. HE hatched, and not only was HE a male, HE was NOT albino. Sick to my stomach. Although, at least I know for sure my female is a female - really doubting with no eggs in 4 years.

Bred her last year and no eggs. Why you little *%#*!

This season, she laid 5 healthy eggs. One starts going bad 2 weeks before hatch date. Two others, 5 days before hatching start looking rough. You have got to be friggin kidding!

The 2nd worst egg hatches. It's a normal looking 100% het albino. I cut open the dead egg. Pink eyes. Did I finally prove out this het? I cannot be sure since this one did not go full-term.

I cut open the 3rd bad looking egg. Full-term dead normal looking 100% het albino. Would someone just kick me in the crotch already!!

The last two eggs look full and healthy, slight dimpling. But they are on day 61 with no signs of pipping. Given the frustrations this female has given me, I decided to cut the egg.

Eureka!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A live albino!

I'm not going to get too excited, but at least I finally know. If it comes out alive, I'll post pictures of the most expensive albino I have ever produced.

Yeah, sometimes it happens and you have to deal with it, but it's still frustrating.

i feel your pain Jay, I bought a pair of het caramels in '01, and finally get a caramel from her this year.
at least I raised them from hatchlings, but I bought hets in later years that produced before her, the male actually father PH clutches that grew up and proved out before this female.

female het caramel in '01, not cheap for a 7 year project.

but congrats that you finally prover her out.

Ouch! I'm sure that wasn't cheap. Don't you just hate it when they do crap like this to us. Don't they know they are supposed to produce on queue? LOL

At this rate, I'm (somewhat) happy, although I feel like the guy who received his pardon 10 minutes too late.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that little guy!

I wonder how many among us would have stuck it out, continuing to try . . . . I doubt I would have had the patience.

Well, I was sort of compelled to. I picked her up as a 100% het albino, but as far as I was concerned, she was not proven until I proved her out. On the one hand, I'm glad I did. On the other, I'm (almost) too tired to enjoy the success.

One other thing I forgot to mention, a little while back, I put a live small-medium rat in her cage. When I checked on her, I did not see the rat. I figured she ate it. Well, come morning, I checked on her, as I do all my animals and found she was chewed up pretty good. The rat obviously was not eaten and very well hidden. This was the lowest point in our relationship. I was one straw away from throwing in the towel.

Jay Congradts!!1 I am glad she finally proved out for you. I know after all this time it finally makes you feel good about her. Hopefully next season you will get a clutch full of albinos.

Congrats Jay, I am working on a similar story with my Lavender Albino project. Except I raised my het female from a hatchling, got 5 slugs a one fertile egg her first year (I good egg ended up being a 66% het male). This year I tried her again and she never devloped. Hopfully next year I will have a little more luck with her. I actualy have a bunch of 50% het females that my 100% het male produced that will be ready this year so hopefully I might end up producing one without even relying on her. I, like you, paid a TON of money for this pair of hets.

Have you had any luck with your pied project yet? I know you mentioned that was another project that was not being kind to you.

Thanks!

The Pied project. Another disappointment in my life. This is not as bad, but with animals that don't want to feed on more than one small rat per month, they never grow. I have since switched them over to ASF's. I'm getting a better feeding response and hopefully, will have some Pieds for next season.

And yes, if I produce them, this will be another success story, although a painful one. I know we all have our problem children but what can you do. Sucks to be us! LOL
