Plenty of places to order online but just as many local and would likely cost less - unless you live in the middle of no where? How much do you need? What are you looking for? Anything from a pet store to a farm and ranch store could work.

Yeah, I pretty much live in the middle of nowhere. I'd like to buy it in a larger quantity if possible(I've got about 7 mice at the moment but they'll be plenty more soon). I live across from a farmer's co-op, but there's no rodent stuff, unless I want mouse traps. There's a petco near by, but i don't want to go in or buy anythong from them. I get really mad every time I walk past the reptile section, and the manager thinks his "vet" knows everything, which is why the bearded dragons are overcrowded, fed a diet that they can't even digest and are at 85 degrees, no temp gradient(they need a 110 degree hot spot). But that's another story.
I want a food that is plant based, healthy, and inexpensive. the food I used to use had grain mites in it and then I had to de-infest the cages of all the snakes that eat prekilled.

Normally you can get your farm and ranch to order you a large bag of Mazuri Rodent Chow. Very inexpensive. That's where I get mine.

Ace hardware can also order Mazuri. The price just went up to $18 a bag at my Ace.

you'll probaly benefit the most with. a 20lb bag will last you months if you are only dealing with mice.

remember HIGH quality, no dyes, no additives and always read the protein/fat percentages before you buy

I pick up a 8 pd bag of squirrel food for $5 and then mix it 50% 50% with goat pellets $10 for 50pds at my local feed store. The squirrel feed is nice because it has all nut and seeds, corn, black sun flower, peanuts, and what not, non of which are processed, the goat feed is added just to make it cheaper in the long run. I go through a I cream pail a week with my 6 breeder rats and all their babies, a 8 pound bag of squirrel food last me almost a month. So with mice you really would be set for a while. If you wanted you could probably do just squirrel food as well. If you do it is nice because their poop will be a lot smaller because they aren't eating all that glue like stuff that holds pellets together, much easier for them to break down. Bird seed can work to put I really like the peanuts for protein in my mix.

most rats and mice will pick those out of any trail mix, and sun flowers seeds are heavy in fat.

thanks for that heads up. I never would have thought any seed would be high in fat.

I usually just feed cat food that I already have and any table scraps left over from lunch and/or dinner.

Of course I just have a pair of rats at the moment, but they did just had babies so I'll be feeding more mouths soon.

I agree with Jay. I use mazuri you can go to their website and they have a dealer locator then you can call them and they will order it for you. In a pinch i have gone to Walmart and gotten some of their block type rodent food.

teaspoon Sep 19, 2008 02:42 PM

I've done the cat food thing befor, and it makes their fur really greasy. Not only that, but it makes them higher in fat and not as healthy for the snakes.I see what wal-mart has and get ace to order something else.
