My head hurts... thermostat quandary....

rodsandreins Sep 18, 2008 11:50 AM

Ok, I am totally overwhelmed with the thermostat decision... my daughter is preparing for her first ball python, we'll be getting a juvenile, housing in a tub, using Flexwatt or an Ultratherm mat for heating... house ranges from 65 to 85 degrees through the year.
Of course, I want to do the best I can by this snake and set my daughter up for the greatest possible success... and balance that with cost, LOL. Ideally I suppose I'd go with a proportional with night drop, probably Herpstat ND... but is this overkill for our situation? Help me! I'm flailing and I just need to make a stinkin' decision already, before we actually HAVE the snake for crying out loud . Thanks in advance!

A Herpstat ND is not overkill but not necessary either. A Johnson Control A419 would do just fine for half the price. That said, I would opt for the ND but thats just me.

Since you only are having one snake why dont you just go by one of those plug in lamp dimmers. Works the same and all you got to do is play with it til the temp is right and only runs you a couple of bucks a hell of alot cheaper than a reptile thermostat the pet store would sell you.
