A little help.....

wesmknight Sep 18, 2008 01:09 PM

Hi,

I currently own a trio of baby Sumatran Waters. They are all about 20" or so. Over the weekend my power went out for about 12 hours, with temperatures dropping into the low 50's after Hurricane IKE. Worrying about my (extremely healthy) pets, I eventually decided to provide them with some heat by placing a candle under a aluminum pan so that it would deciminate some warmth. The Next day I noticed a small, round depression on the top of one of my little guy's heads. I didn't think they could possibly get too close to the flame given the way I had it arranged, but I am starting to worry that he sustained a burn. It seems to be scabbing over, but it also appears kinda deep. I have been applying some triple-antibiotic ointment, but I don't know if that is enough. He is eating fine, so I am hoping for some suggestions for his treatment. Will the ointment be enough? Also, could it be something other than a burn? Any help would be greatly welcomed.

peace

If I know one thing from my (short) experiance with monitors it is that unlike any other reptile, they are very inquisitive. Any thing you put in that cage is going to be investigated whether you see it happen or not.

As to whether or not your animal has a burn, and how bad it is...I have no clue. It's either go to the vet, or try to provide adequate husbandry so that the animal can heal itself.

goodluck,

Mike.

I suppose what I am really wanting to know is are there any other sort of health problems that it could be? Could it be a worm or parasite? Is there anything else that causes round, pit-like depressions on a monitor's head? To be honest, the wound deosn't look much like I would expect a burn to look. I'm certainly not avoiding the VET, I just want to ask other, more experienced hobbiest their opinions before I consult one. It might be something very simple that I need to learn about and learn how to treat myself.

I would also like to know what it would look like if it gets infected? It doesn't seem to be at all infected at the moment..... just a scabbed over pit.

Thanks for your input.

I am not an expert but my monitor had a burn and it looked like a little impression and the skin was very hard where it was at and then a couple of weeks it started pealing off and I premoved the dead skin and kept puting neosporin on it and it is almost healed they are pretty resilient to infection i was told especially good if they keep eating.. would still get another opinion from people and picture would probably help people give you an answer.
