Guacomole Lookin Poo Ok?

jsp228 Sep 18, 2008 09:34 PM

Hey everyone, I'm new to bearded dragons and just got a baby/juvenile today. I bought it from thepetzone and he looks great. After settling him in a 20 gal aqaurium with the proper lighting (reptisun 5.0 heat lamp with temps around 98 in basking) and giving him a few hours to settle I finally saw him munch on some carrot top leaves and a pound a cricket (i only threw in one in case he was too stressed about eating on the first day there wouldnt by crickets all over the place). Then I saw him poop and at first a drop of liquid came out and then a mushy green guacamole poo came out with a white portion. The stool wasn't too runny which I read was a sign of parasites and didn't smell TERRIBLE, but is green poop natural? He did eat alot of veggies but im assuming the poop came from whatever he ate yesterday and not an hour before he pooed. Is it common for beardies who love veggies to have guacamole type poo?

Thanks

I'm not sure. Mine eats a lot of greens, but her poop is always black. My iguana is a vegetarian and his poop is black, too. Maybe it's what he ate at the place where you got him. They may be feeding him some commercial food.

I would raise the basking temp so he can choose how hot he wants to bask in but should have access to 115F in part of the basking are. (wide logs set at an incline, driftwood, securely stacked and staggered bricks or stones etc.). The lower area should be around 95F but the highest areas should have temps closer to 120F.

But temp isn't the problem you are asking about.

If you just bought your dragon, the green poop is most likely due to dyes found in many commercial foods. I wouldn't worry about it for now. Just clean well and monitor. If the poops are always really running and green after a week, bring one in for a fecal check from a vet.

Thanks for all the responses. I just saw him poo today and it was black and normal. I've noticed he only eats about 2-3 crickets a day and ignores the rest tho. He munches on a bit of salad here and there. I hope he settles in quickly so I can see him become the verocious eater I see on youtube!
