spider or het albino, whitch to choose.

edenspets Sep 18, 2008 11:58 PM

ok, here's my sticking point. i purchased an albino male a few days back. breeding age, eating great, no complaints. i am curious about breeding him. so i searched for a breeder het female. finally came across one today. 900 grams. bred last season. descent price. sounded like the way to go. i get home from work, and i find an e mail from the person i purchased the albino off of asking if i want to make him an offer on his breeder age female spider. so............ i'm new to balls. was mainly into leopard geckos before this. so is there anything other then het spiders that could come out of a albino x spider pairing. or do i stick with the origonal plan as far as albino x het albino. ( i'm not a genetics whiz, i sencerely would appreciate some sound advice.

with the het albino female, at 900grams and bred last year...did she produce eggs??
either the guy is not telling the truth, or she is a dwarf snake of healthy breeding age/size, or he bred a very young animal.
none are good in my opinion.
do you know the guy/gal, i'm leary of buying hets unless you know/trust the breeder, they look normal and the only way to know if you got what you paid for is for them to produce the desired morph.

there is no such thing as a het spider they are dominant morphs, so half of the clutch would (probability wise) be spiders, and these spiders would also be het albino, and the non spiders would be het albino.
so half het albino, and half spider het albino.

>there is no such thing as a het spider

Small correction: There are no het spiders that look normal

A het spider has a spider mutant gene paired with a normal gene. All spiders presently known have a spider gene paired with a normal gene, making them all het spiders.

Otherwise I agree with Tom.

Mating a spider to an albino is the first step to making spider albinos. The second step is to raise the spider het albinos and mate them to an albino. Expectation:
1/4 spider albinos
1/4 spider (het albino)
1/4 albino
1/4 normal looking (het albino)
(Actual results tend to approximate expectation but do not have to match expectation.)

Mating a spider het albino to a het albino should produce 1/8 spider albinos.

See the link for a picture of a spider albino. I rather like the look, but YMMV.

another question that has been in my head. seems from what i hear everyone breeds an albino to a het. is there a reason i am not aware of that no one seems to breed albino to albino? ( thanks to all who have and do respond )

As far as I know, the main reason is that an albino and a het albino cost less than two albinos. I haven't heard of any problems breeding two albino ball pythons. I think there will be more albino x albino matings as prices go down.
