niddy Sep 19, 2008 10:00 AM

Anyone heard about when the meal worm shortage may be over? My guys haven't had em in sooooo long and they are their favorite.

Why not get some superworms.works just as well and they are slower to turn to beetles?

niddy Sep 19, 2008 12:49 PM

We have been doing superworms. They do work ok, but my beardies eat meal worms lots better.

Thanks!

Mealworms have are hard chitin shell that is pretty much undigestable to beardies so I never feed them.

niddy Sep 19, 2008 04:46 PM

Yup I've heard that too, but we all know that my guys aren't your normal beardies. Honestly they eat, drink and poop better on mealworms than on any other live feeder. Go fig.

I think crickets work pretty well, too. My girl loves them and she poops almost everyday. One thing good about crickets is that you gutload them with food you want your beardie to get some also because crickets are scavengers and will eat almost anything.

If only! Did I mention mine won't even give crix a second look? Like I said, I have very weird beardies! lol

My guy hasn't been eatting crickets lately either..He eats mostly superworms, butterworms, and hornworms..Do any of you gut load superworms??I am still wondering if superworms are very good for my beardie and chameleon even though they aren't gut loaded..I wish they'd just eat crickets..They poop more on crickets..They just are on strike now..

It's my understanding - only from seeing it repeated often on forums such as these - that crickets have very large "guts", so they're able to hold a lot more of the gutload when you feed them off. Superworms aren't built that way, they retain minimal food so don't pass it along so much when you feed them off. Or so they say. Maybe one day after I feed my supers a lot, I'll dissect a few and see how much they're carrying, lol.

Anyway, I feed my Supers a very high quality food just in case. I also mist them before I feed the off and then dust them with Spirulina powder to get a little more green stuff in my lizards.

My dragons have done the same, they have stopped eating crix lately. I will be trying them on supers this next week, very frustrating.

beardielover17 Sep 20, 2008 09:08 AM

i personally dont feed my dragons mealworms but my one male refuses crickets so i feed him supers, hornworms and silkworms (silkies are his main staple) why dont u try getting a silkworm pod and see if your dragon likes them...they can be tough to find at times but i love them as a feeder...no chitin, they dont bite and are naturally pretty nutritious for your dragon...if not i know you can try roaches to see if your dragon will eat those...roaches creep me out too much to use so i stick to worms and crix

I realize that this question was asked in the previous thread however i wasn't really clear about the answer. Is it okay to feed adult bearded dragons strictly super worms when they get to the stage of insect feedings only two or three times a week(alog with veggies everyday)?

Paradon Sep 20, 2008 10:53 PM

Yes, you can feed it as the main staple, but really you want to add variety of diet, so a variety of insect preys should be fed.
