Feeder anoles for my cali kings?

king_crazy Sep 20, 2008 01:50 PM

There's a ton of anoles outside my house right now for some reason. Are these good food for my cali kings if I catch and freeze them? I know kings love lizards but my biggest fear is that they won't go back to mice if I start giving them the good stuff. Also, what about parasites on the anoles since they're wild caught? Would this be an issue?

If they are frozen, they will no longer have parasites to harm the snake, however there is the question of very possible insecticides that the anole's injest along with the insects the anole's consume, ESPECIALLY around city areas.

I have certainly fed many of my animals in the past Anole's as well, but in past years, I've concluded that it is much better to just stay with rodent's unless they will only accept anoles, and even then, see if they will take scented offerings instead.

In my opinion, they will probably grow more rapidly on mice as well, unless you give them MANY lizards on a very steady basis.

They will probably go back to mice - I've never found a wild adult cal king that refuses mice, and they largely eat reptiles in the wild.

Baby cal kings sometimes can be a little pickier - at least for me, so I wouldn't offer lizards to baby cal kings that take rodents - but adults, it shouldn't be a problem.

However, the issue of possible pollutants such as insect and weed killer would be a concern.
