Kenabec & Niizh

Garter_Gabby Sep 21, 2008 12:39 PM

Widdo Kenabec went back to his breeder yesterday as he, Kenabec, has only eaten once (f/t) for me and has not eaten in three weeks. So Jodi will recondition Kenabec with live pinkies and then transition him on to f/t again. Kenabec may be gone as long as two months.

I went to TCR (Twin Cities Reptiles) last week to get a live pinkie for Kenabec and freaked out. Man, I can handle f/t like everyone else, but I can't deal with live. Yeah. A wuss. Can't help it. I love all creatures and while my brain can deal with the food chain, my heart can't. The wee mousies were SO CUTE and SWEET! I just couldn't do it so got in touch with Jodi.

Niizh, my green pride and joy and love of my live, on the other hand is a pigglette of good Hoggy proportions and Jodi was very pleased to see how Niizh is coming along. Niizh has now not eaten in a week and I'm hopeful for a shed. No overt signs yet but possibly a bit duller. Can't wait until he does shed as it will be the first for my baby since he's been with me and as a good momma I will keep it!

I've first dibs on greens and yellows (should there be any of each) in next year's hatch. Once can never have too many Hoggies nor have too much green in their life! Niizh' mom was a yellow. (Kenabec and Niizh have the same daddy, but different moms - 1/2 bros.)

Yesterday at TCR I got Niizh a Selaginella apoda, Meadow Moss, for his tank. I just love mosses. I left it in the pot and hid the pot behind the big bow in the mopani log so I can't see the pot. The moss comes up and over the log and looks so good and natural! It really brightens the tank with dark green and a different texture, where heretofore the tank had been all brown and wood texture. Niizh seems to like it somewhat but I still think he has to get used to it. *I* love it and even more like staring and watching Niizh and his tank.

So now Niizh has his 'sauna' (take-your-lunch-to-work-thingy, stuffed with wet moss, flipped up-side-down on its lid, and a door cut into the container) over the warm spot and his soft, cuddly, slightly most, snuggly fern in the cooler end.

It is hard to not fall for these hognose isn't it? Sounds like you have some nice ones. Did they come from Twin City? A good green hog is a joy to just look at in the light.

LOL! Once in love with a Hoggy, your heart's gone forever.

No, I didn't get K & N from TCR. I got them via the breeder, Jodi Aherns. I'm totally in love with the guy - though I'm old enuff to be his mother... - because K & N are my first Hoggies and it was important to me to find someone that continued to care for their snakes once placed. Jodi has been a DOLL and in the beginning put up with one or more phone calls daily, has calmed me and is teaching me to be a good Hoggy momma. I asked if he would be with me for the life of my kids and he assured me he would be and he's not let me down a SECOND since getting the boys. He's answered every question - no matter how stupid it appears to a longstanding breeder - I've ever had; lectured me on putting my money in an independent vs. a chain store (you gotta respect someone that stands up for what they believe no matter how they think it's going to be accepted); always returned my phone calls if not within minutes or a few hours, within the same 24 hour period. The guy is a saint; I'm not the easiest person to deal with - he'll concur! LOL!!!

Jodi laughs at me. I can only tell Niizh is green when I compare him to Kenabec, a normal. Just yesterday at TCR Jodi asked in an incredulous voice, "You can't see the green in him?"

"Nope. Not unless I compare The Boys."

Jodi just shook his head.

When I've got Niizh out and 'playing' with him, I'll take him over to the open window and let him get some sunlight as I look for his green. Then I can see it a little bit.

I don't care. Green's green whether I can see it or not. Maybe he's not SCREAMING green to me. Who cares? He's my precious perfect and as such he's the best green Hoggy in the entire world.

Yeah. I think my boys are nice. I'm very happy with them and their breeder. Enuff so I want more - my experience with Jodi has just been a joy from get go.

And I guess Jodi can handle me as he's willing to sell me MORE precious Hoggies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. I'm in Hog Heaven!

I understand. They are the ones I check on first when I come in. I hope every hog we send out into the world gets as happy an owner as you.
Enjoy

Oh, gosh. Amanda, that is so very, very nice and sweet of you. To acknowledge my love o'My Boys. Thanks!

Yeah. I HATED snakes until I fell in love with Wiinie the Poo, a garter (get it? POO? They musk?) I talked the park into keeping. That's a story for another time...

Then I was introduced to Eastern Hoggies due to one we found at the park and kept for one day, before releasing, to use in our snake program.

I was sold on Easties. And wanted one for me to have and take to the park to use in our program. But... You know, their requirements are so much more difficult to meet than Westies.

But - at the time - Westies were ugly to me. Ish. Not near as cute as an Eastern.

STUPID ME!

I decided to get a CB Western due to their easier feeding requirments, got my Hoggies (my dual Hoggies is another story!), and I can never again say an Eastern's cuter than a Westie as THEY AREN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WESTIES FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kiss my babies. Salmonella be damned. So far, I've not cramped or pooed due to kissing The Boys. Who knows? Maybe Muzzer and her Boys have the same kind'a germs?

All I know, there is NOTHING like a Westie. Nothing.

Thanks for your kind words. I have to agree with you - if everyone loved their Hoggies as I do, and prolly like you do, we'd never find kids up for adoption.

Thanks, Amanda. Nice to know you.

I have to snigger at your words. Please know it's not directed at you, my sniggering, but what came before here, months ago.

I admit I'm a new Hoggy Muzzer, and I've said so. Months ago I was here cackling my exitment and joy at becoming - in the forecoming months - my joy and xuberence regarding my forthcoming joy of having Hoggies.

I was met with disgust, hate - if I may use a term that's prolly too harsh (not really...), and was derided for my ignorance and supposed inability to properly care for my sweet Boys. Actually, I was told in here - and in a private e-mail sent from this forum (and that I've kept...) - that I would not succeed in properly caring for a Hoggy, let alone the two I got (I'd contracted for one, but when I learned my breeder, Jodi, also had a green wee hatchling, well... That being my fav color, what was I to do????).

It just warms the cockles o'my heart to read your words of congratulations and support. And confirms my opinion of an ass is an ass.

Again, Amanda...

Thanks. From me, Kenabec and Niizh.

Thanks so much. Hugs and kisses from us three.

I understand completely what you are talking about. They want to talk smack about your husbandry, but then don't want to teach the right way. There are the exceptions on here, but there are a few you can tell don't like newbies.

Good Job Gabby,
Brian

LOL!!! Said so much more suscintly than I! I must admit, on the whole, it's only been one bad apple - and I shouldn't let that apple spoil the entire bunch. Because the folks here seem to be pretty nice. Most, it seems, are here for pics and touting the newest morph they've cabbaged on to and not for chit-chat, and totally ignore and have no interest in me and/or my kids. Not that that's bad, but that's not me. I'm just a pet owner seeking like minds that have the inability to quit talking about Hoggies!

Thanks for the kudos, Brian! I appreciate it! Youz a noob yourself? Whutchew got? Tell me about your kid(s)!

I'm all ears...

I got into hogs about 2 1/2 years ago and just in the last year I got into the morphology of them. I have been into reptiles my whole life. My friend Chris took some pictures of some of my hogs. If you scroll down in this forum you will see hognose photo shoot. Those are some of my many kids. Right now I have over forty reptiles in my collection. I raise my own rats, mice and rabbits.

LOL!
First, congrats! Hoggies are fun and sooo cute.
Second, Bruce (TCR) and Jodi are good people. They know their critters and help support all the way.
I currently have 9 western hoggies and will probably get an albino this year. I also live in the Twin Cities(small world)and hope to see you around sometime.
Take good care of those babies.

Kareo!

Thank you for your congratulations and your warm wishes I continue loving and kissing and caring for the two best Hoggies in the world!

I only know Bruce to look at him and thank him for my f/t pinkies. And I can't say I know Jodi well, but...

As far as his consideration of his snakes and me and the after-the-sale-support... The guy is a saint and love him to death.

I hope to meet you around here and there. OH! It's YOU that has the nine Hoggies. I got you confused with Brian in another thread.

Do you ever wish, as I do, that Hoggies were like garters and we could keep a bazillion in one tank? I think this all the time. I so wish it could be different than the way it is. But it can't and I need to suck it up.

Hope to meet you soon, Kareo, and - again - thank you for your kind thoughts.
