Feeding / shedding question

wvkingsnake Sep 21, 2008 08:03 PM

On 9/13 I purchased a juvenile desert kingsnake about 12 inches long. Per the numerous books and websites I read in preparation for snake ownership I let the snake acclimate to his new environment and did not attempt to feed or handle him. At the 1 week mark I attempted to feed him a dead pinkie first by placing him in a separate container with the pinkie which was unsuccessful and second by placing him in a small paper bag over night with the pinkie which was also unsuccessful.

In addition to his not eating, his eyes have turned opaque which I have read means he is beginning his shed process which I have read could be a major reason why snakes won’t feed. So when should I attempt to feed my snake again, in a few days, or only after the shed process has completed, or some other time frame?? Thanks in advance!

normally my king wont eat at all before she sheds but as soon as she does she eats like a horse. She wanted to eat the day she shed which I dont know if thats common or not but I guess she is just hungry. Also my king wont eat anything dead unfortunatly.

I wouldn't even bother with attempting to feed it until AFTER it sheds. This is very typical of some individuals......some will feed while in full "blue", while others will absolutely refuse. If it won't accept a warmed up Frozen/Thawed pinky,..then try a live one.

It will shed two to four days after it's eye's COMPLETELY clear up again, depending on temps and activity level.
