Converting To Frozen/ Thawed Rats

lordvoldemort Sep 22, 2008 08:17 PM

Hi, i have a male reticulated python thats about 7 feet long. Feeding on live rats once every 5-7 days. I would like to start feeding him frozen/thawed rats. What is the best way to do this? Any info would be helpful.
Thanks

Get a frozen rat, thaw it out, and use tongs to feed the snake. Sometimes they don't always jump on so try leaving it in the cage for a little bit. But all mine will strike at them once they are introduced.

If that does not work, but the rat in a zip lock bag, then put that into a warm bucket of water, and let it sit until it gets warm, then try the tongs again. Should take it, if not leave it in and come back.

If that does not work you will have to go with using pre killed for a few weeks and then thawed, but I do not think this step is needed.

as per the warming part, and, if not working try keeping a live rat and swish the thawed warmed rat in fresh live rat bedding and or rub it on a live rats back and try the tongs

This week i got a 2 year old genetic striped retic. The breeder told me she has only been fed live, i only feed frozen.

I thawed the rat, and as soon as i opened the cage, BAM, it took it and ate it, no problems It shouldn't be a problem, retics tear up anything you give them, usually.
