ASF Breeder rack design Q's

Skyetone Sep 22, 2008 08:54 PM

I am done with mice :D who isn't right? I have built rat racks with the black home depot concrete mixing tubs. I can build. I am going to use short totes sterilites from walmart. But am going to put a "notch" in the top so I can put run wheels in each breeder set. I have had better luck with run wheels in the ten gallons I have used for the last year. Has anyone used this idea before? What ASF spacific ideas do you guys have. I am going to do central water from ag select and a hopper system on top. I use finch food with raw sunflower seeds for there main food now. I'd like to figure out a 12dollar a 50LB bag I could use. But in shipping it seems to be a killer. Any pics would be cool. I am going to do about 30 totes that are about 24x30x3 inches roughly.

They're chewers so make sure your tubs have no ridges or holes to get escape holes started.

Use 1/4" or 3/8" mesh as the young ASF can easily get through 1/2" mesh

Wheels are good. I use small wodent wheels for them.

Yea on the mesh size..... Do the weinlings really get out of 1/2 inch? Seems that by the time they are big enough to get off moms teet they would be to big....

They easily get through 1/2" mesh. I'm not sure if they were weanlings or not but ASF pups become active and mobile at a very young age and size.

Mine are kept in a 15 gal but they have a lab block hopper made out of 1/2" mesh and when it's low I watch them scoot through the mesh all the time.
