leaving crickets in tank

arapates Sep 22, 2008 09:28 PM

I have two american toads and a gecko that both eat mainly crickets. I like to leave a few in the tank at all times so they can have the pleasure of hunting. I read somewhere that you need to remove any uneaten crickets from the tank when your pet is done eating. Anyone know why this is? I dont want to cause any stress to them, I thought they enjoyed it.

It can cause stress and the crickets may also try to taste test the other inhabitants. They've been known to chew off toes.

When I had bearded dragons I actually bred crickets in their tank. I found that as long as the crickets had enough moisture, food, and hiding places they never bothered the dragons. My dragons tank was 4x3x3 foot also.

well, just for safety, I'm gonna try to not leave to many in there, and I put some lettuce in there too, so they don't get too hungry. The thought of my gecko getting his toes bit off is just gross.
