recommend a snake

cactuskent Sep 06, 2003 09:24 AM

hey, at the moment, all i have is a high gold female ball python(shes approaching 2months and is 20/21inches for anyone interested) but i want to expand and get another snake, but i dont really know which.
i want something that grows to a decent size(6/7foot at the most) is handleable, and impressive to look at(i appreciate that corns and kings may be good pets and pretty etc, but they just arent as appealing to me due to the fact theyre extremely lacking on girth, thats why i opted for a ball python originally) it also needs to be affordable(im 15,approacing 16 so aint got a lot of cash)can anyone recommend anything?much appreciated

The only thing girthier than a ball python is a blood python... Otherwise most snakes that stay 6 or 7 feet tend to be on the skinny side.

I'd suggest a black pine snake or a bullsnake. They are members of the genus _Pituophis_. Most members of the genus can get over six feet long (record length for the bull is around 8-1/2 feet) and are relatively girthy for colubrids. IMHO, the bullsnake and black pine are the most girthy of the genus. The black pine is a little more mellow than the bullsnake, in my opinion, but both are quite manageable and make great pets. And when annoyed, a big _Pituophis_ has a hiss like a ruptured steam pipe. VERY impressive (too much so for some). Check out the Bull/Pine/Gopher Snake forum and the Pituophis Page here at kingsnake.com. Good luck.

thanks for your suggestions guys,il take em into consideration, anyone else?any boas?

Hogg Island boa constrictors might fit the bill. Most other small boas are quite slender (eg rainbows), unless you're interested in sand boas. Or maybe viper boas. But they're a bit on the smallish side.

well, the girth isnt too important,as long as its thicker than a corn snake at least, thanks for your help, anyone else?

have you looked at a carpet python?

Slightly bigger but a Dumerils Boa is beautiful, girthy, and has a great temperament. Kind of pricey but you can get deals at most shows.
