Now, if I can just get the gauge on my car to tell me snake body temps instead of air temps...
This one pretty much sums up what I do with them...
Thanks for looking,
Michael
73*, sunny but windy, board was in the shade at 4pm when snake was found but likely in sun up to about an hour before. Snake was inactive (i.e. not moving...couldn't check her pupils to see if she was sleeping...) when found.
Thanks,
Michael
Very sweet find!
Yes, you could have EASILY gotten more accurate data though!, for example, all you had to do was knock on the board she was under, and if you heard a little voice call out.."hold on!, give me a second!", you would have then KNOWN she was sleeping, and had to spruce up a bit before presenting herself for capture!..LOL!
Typical female!

For what its worth, I think your data collection is just fine. Thanks.

Thanks Tony. So much we (even the guys who do this stuff for a living) don't know. Ya know?
Have a good one.
Michael

Cool to see how they utilize those rodent burrows under AC. She was a perfect female without a scar on her. I believe she is a recapture from the same board from early May of this year (based on the aberrant pattern about 1/3 the way down her back). Kind of makes you wonder what she's been up to over the past four months. Luckily, the site where she was found is on the edge of about 200 acres of woods with no plans of development anytime soon, so hopefully I'll see her again next year.
Also had a recapture in April of this year of a female in Cleveland Co that was caught last year. It pays to put 'em back.
Thanks,
Michael
That is really nice to know that you recaptured a few to be let go..yet once again!,....sort of leaves ya' walkin' away with with a nice warm feeling!..LOL!
Great stuff!

Eastern Kings are pretty rare out here, utilizing specific patches of habitat, so it makes the finds that much more special. I live out here and get out in the field at least once a week (if only for an hour or so) during the spring and fall and I still only see 2-3 each year out here. Finding the same snake several months or a year later, looking good, feels really good.
Now, in the coastal plain, I consistently find eastern kings about every other trip in the spring. Land is flatter, there is more water, more turtles, more lizards, which equal more eastern kings.
Take it easy,
Michael
Old picture from Burke County, just west of Catawba in the western Piedmont region of North Carolina. This is from way back in 73 or so when I lived just outside of Morganton for a few years. Very nice king with perfect white chain pattern. Feeding on a chick.

Kings from the area are not so common, but perfect examples of what a chain king should look like...blue black, narrow bands..awesome!
If you ever find yourself back in the area and want to get out in the woods, let me know.
Michael
Hey, if it works, it works. Sometimes simple is better.
Nice find.
