question about stillwater hypo

madeline Sep 23, 2008 03:36 PM

Recently, I have seen stillwater hypo cross trumb line hypos. Since the two are not compatible, and if the breeding resulted in a stillwater hypo, would this be a pure stillwater hypo? Will it's genetic makeup be as the original two snakes or is it considered outcrossed? Sorry, I am new to all this genetics.

oh, forgot to add, this is the breeding of het to het, I already know you will get normals when breeding stillwater cross trumb. line hypos.

Well, yes it will be a "pure" stillwater hypo, in that it will express the homozygous form of that particular gene. As far as being a "pure locality" Stillwater bull (hypo or otherwise), no it will not.

But of course few indeed are those who would consider even the original pair of "Stillwater hypo" bulls to be "pure locality", since they were picked up at a rattlesnake roundup that just happened to be held in Stillwater, OK. They could have been collected anywhere from Texas to Nebraska....
