Pits at reptile shows?

skronkykong Sep 24, 2008 10:03 AM

So at every show I've been to in Oklahoma or Texas for the last 10 years I've seen a few pits for sale. But the rules of the show state no native animals are allowed to be sold. So how do they venders get away with this? Does no one really check the animals being sold? I always see pits. Not many, but always some.

What Pits are you seeing? Not all Pituophis live in Tx. and Ok.

I think in the past it was "no wild caught" animals. Unfortunately, I have seen several shows that had just that. If it was no native animals, then it would include greybands, lucy tx rat snakes, mexican milks, etc... The new laws require that a dealer have a dealers license if any of the animals are native to Texas. This is by species and not subspecies. So really, any bullsnake, regardless of morph or locality, is considered native. There are rules for each of these shows and the promoters are supposed to uphold them.

Its the same here in Iowa. You cant have or sell bulls because they are native?!?
But at the last show I was at I saw tons and some vendors I ask told me that it was posted some where no native animals?
Either not everyone listens to the rules or theres a loop hole here too? And if there is a loop hole I'd like to know it because I'd love to keep some Hypo Stillwaters again

Here in Texas, it's a go as long as you have the permit. I think you can't sell bulls in Oklahoma either because they are native, but not sure. With the permit, they give you a long list of what is able to be sold.

That is a nice looking Stillwater bull.

I wonder how hard it is to get a permit.

I know I'm replying to this a bit late, but w/ regard to natives; I know here in CA, a few native species (gophers being one of them) can be bred and sold w/ the purchase of a $50 permit from DFG. Maybe the same holds true for other states as well.
