Tokay introducing question

desertgecko Sep 06, 2003 10:40 AM

would it be wise for me to introduce a male AND a female to my current female? the new male and female im interested in are already beginning to mate. would my current tokay feel too threathened by this??

the viv they'll be going into is 4.5ft high, 2.5ft wide and 18 inches deep. am i right in thinking this will take 3 tokays??

thanks

Claire

They should make a happy family. I have two females and one male and introduced them all at different times and never had a prob. Just keep a good eye when u put them together. Be prepared for many babies, i have 6 and about 10 eggs still incubating. average time for the eggs to hatch is about 100 days.

If you introduce the pair into the new tank, they very likely will stop to show mating behaviour.
Changing tanks for tokays often means a longer adaptation period. Can take a few weeks or even up to a year-tokays are individuals.
Normally female tokays get along well. But I also had one particular female which did attack any other female introduced to her. So females CAN be territorial and one can´t predict if it works in your case or not. Chances are higher it works...
If you completely change the interior of the tank, the "old" female may feel less "at home" and may be hence less agressive..
I still think that your cage is not on the large side for a trio...but OK, (too) many people use much smaller cages.

Hope that helps

Ingo
