Pen pics before and after

boxienuts Sep 24, 2008 01:24 PM

Here are some pics of my eastern 4ft x 8ft pen, one take in spring and then one from yesterday, the swiss chard and others filled in to create an edible jungle by the water dish, which also shaded the water dish to keep it cooler. I also included a pic of my garden pond, next spring I plan to put a cinder block wall all the way around the perimeter of the pond area to be used as a weekend day pen.

They're going to love that day pen next season. Does the pond attract a lot of critters the boxies would enjoy eating? I would assume so, but never having a pond I'm not sure, other than mosquitoes, what bugs are attracted to ponds.

The pond produces vertually zero mosquitoes, as it is moving water, it does produce a lot of dragon flies and toads though. It also attracts a lot of birds including quail and frogs and toads, and occational snake.

Jeff, great habitat for box turtles! You should do what I did on YouTube and put them on the internet so people can see how box turtle can live with a little effort Tess

Thanks Tess,
Well the way I look at it, my set-up meets all their needs and then some, I think they are happy and health and get plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and exercise, yet my set-up isn't as ideal as a large open area pen like a lot of you have, but it sure beats the heck out of living in a 10 gal aquarium indoors at the pet shop. I'm not sure about YouTube, I guess I could make a short video with my video camera, not sure about all the details of posting on YouTube. I actully took photos of each step in the process of building that pen, and the materials used.

That info would probably be of great value to many people I did the same in my book thinking it would help people so they didn't have to think about the details and could just go about making the pens Tess
